Australian biotech company Mesolab presented the results of its experimental drug, rexlemestrocel-L, created using bone marrow stem cells, NewAtlas reports . The treatment consists of a single injection administered directly into the damaged intervertebral disc.
The therapy is designed for people with chronic low back pain associated with intervertebral disc degeneration. This new approach differs from conventional chronic pain treatments because it directly addresses the source of disc degeneration. The therapy aims to restore or strengthen already damaged tissue.
Currently, patients have experienced pain relief for 12 months. Next year, scientists will also present final results on a new sample of 350 participants. If the treatment's effectiveness is confirmed, this single injection could become a new treatment option for chronic low back pain.
Previously, other scientists demonstrated that brain receptors can shut down chronic pain. This discovery could lead to the development of universal approaches to treating neuropathic pain.
