WHO members reach consensus on pandemic treaty after three years of negotiations

The World Health Organization member states have reached consensus on the Pandemics Agreement, which regulates global actions in the event of similar events in the future. Negotiations on this document, which began against the backdrop of the Covid pandemic, lasted more than three years and required 13 formal rounds, nine of which were extended, and many informal and intersessional discussions. Particular disagreement was caused by Article 11 of the agreement, which is devoted to the provision of technologies to combat the pandemic to developing countries.

As a result, a draft of the 32-page document was approved by all parties. The final version of the document will be presented at the 78th World Health Assembly in May 2025. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the achievement of consensus on the agreement historic.
