Scientists have identified the best snack before bed that reduces the risk of diabetes

Scientists conducted a 12-week experiment with 51 volunteers with prediabetes. Participants were given 60 grams of pistachios as a snack at night, and then after a break, the nuts were canceled. The control group consisted of participants with a traditional carbohydrate snack. It turned out that pistachios in the diet contributed to a significant improvement in the composition of the intestinal microbiota,  writes  Science Daily.

Nut consumption significantly increased the abundance of certain strains of beneficial bacteria. For example, Lachnospiraceae, which produces beneficial short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate. Butyrate is known to support the intestinal barrier and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. On the other hand, levels of pathogenic strains associated with metabolic disorders decreased.

"What we're seeing is that pistachios can significantly alter the microbial composition of people with prediabetes, especially when eaten as an evening snack," said study author Christina Petersen. The changes could have long-term health benefits, she said, by reducing inflammation and slowing the progression of diabetes.

The scientists now need to conduct a larger, longer study to confirm their findings. The results could form the basis for new dietary recommendations for people with prediabetes.

Previously, other researchers have found that muscle strength reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by more than 40%. This is equally important data for developing new prevention strategies.
